Mojiya

About

Mojiya is a Japanese-learning app made by Mojiya Studio. It puts a full course, a dictionary, and the things you read and watch in one app, so a word you meet anywhere can be looked up and kept.

The course

Kana, kanji, vocabulary, and grammar, from the N5 band through N1-equivalent, one lesson at a time. Each kanji is written out stroke by stroke, words are voiced, and every card comes back on an FSRS schedule when you are about to forget it. The daily pace is shown as the reviews and minutes it will cost. Progress from Anki, WaniKani, or Renshuu can be brought in.

The dictionary

Search in Japanese, kana, romaji, or English, or draw a kanji you cannot type. Entries show readings, pitch accent, stroke order, and example sentences, and every word is voiced. Yomitan dictionaries can be added, and any word can go to Anki.

Reading and watching

Open an EPUB, a PDF, a CBZ or CBR, or a folder of manga pages, read a book along with its audiobook, play your own video with its subtitle file, follow a YouTube video as a line of Japanese text, or browse any website. A word can be looked up where it stands, even in a speech bubble.

Where it runs

On Android, iOS, and the web, with the same course on each. A free browser extension for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox brings the look-ups to web pages, YouTube, and Netflix on a computer, and Safari on iPhone and iPad gets it with the app. Sign in with Google or Apple; the free lessons and the dictionary need no account.

What it costs

The N5-equivalent band, the first lessons of every higher level, the dictionary, the reader, and the video tools are free. The rest of the course is one licence, monthly, yearly, or lifetime; see pricing. The app shows no ads and has no trackers of its own.
